Voces de Cal Poly

May 2026

OROR partnered with Dr. Karen Muñoz-Christian in the World Languages and Cultures Department at California Polytechnic State University to collaborate with her Winter 2026 Research Methods in Spanish students on listening to, transcribing, and translating seven Spanish-language interviews.

Dr. Muñoz- Christian and her students shared how powerful the experience was — not only to listen to these stories, but to hold them with care as they translated them in order to make them accessible to non-Spanish-speaking community members. These will soon be posted on our communities page under Santa Barbara and Santa Maria.

We were honored to present this collaborative work alongside students through the Voces de Cal Poly (Voices of Cal Poly) Speaker Series, centered on themes of migration, identity, community, memory, and advocacy.

The session explored living histories of belonging and cultural sustainability along California’s Central Coast. Attendees experienced an engaging interdisciplinary conversation grounded in community voices, storytelling, and scholarship, followed by a reception.
